Buying a Bus Body in Punjab: A Checklist for Operators
Punjab is one of India's busiest bus body building regions. Here's how to choose a builder in Bhadaur, Ludhiana or Jalandhar with confidence.
A big share of North India's buses get their bodies in Punjab. Bhadaur in Barnala district is home to many bus body builders, and Ludhiana and Jalandhar have long-established workshops of their own. For an operator that's good news — plenty of choice and competitive prices — but it also means quality can vary a lot from one shed to the next. Before you hand over a chassis, run through these six checks.
1. Ask to see the approval paperwork. Bus bodies in India have to be built to the applicable AIS bus code and type-approved by a testing agency such as ARAI. Ask which code the model you're buying is certified to, and ask to see the certificate for that exact model — not just a logo on the company brochure.
2. Visit the plant, not just the showroom. Walk the floor. Look at the structure tube (zinc-coated GP tube resists rust far better than plain mild steel), the quality of the welds, how the floor and roof are built, and whether there's a proper paint shop. A builder who is confident in their work will be happy to show you around.
3. Look at buses that have already done a few years. A new bus always looks good. Ask for operators you can call, and if you can, look at a body that has been on the road for two or three years. Rust at the joints, rattling panels and door faults show up there first.
4. Get the full specification in writing. Seat count or berth layout, seat material, AC and fitments, paint scheme, delivery date and payment stages — all of it should be on paper before work starts. It protects both sides and avoids surprises at delivery.
5. Think about after-sales distance. Your bus will need the builder again — for a door, a panel, an AC duct or an accident repair. A plant within a day's drive of your depot means faster turnaround and less time off the road. Bhadaur, for example, is a short drive from Barnala, Bathinda, Moga, Sangrur and Ludhiana.
6. Compare value, not just the quoted price. A cheaper body usually saves money on things you can't see — tube thickness, insulation, wiring and sealing. Those are exactly the things that decide how the bus feels after five years of daily running.
